Knowing that our channel was a community channel we researched Medway to come up with ideas for a logo. We had a look at the Medway logo and what they stand for.

Medway's Logo

As you can see the logo has a river that represents the river medway. The logo is simple and fresh and their colour theme is blue. Underneath their tag is 'serving you'. Simple and easy to understand. It gives a feeling that using medway services will be simple, hassle free and they want to serve the public.

We already had knowledge of the iconic river medway, so I thought it would made sense to have a river in the logo to represent the area this community channel covers. I know that Medway is in Kent. I have knowledge that Medway is in Kent. Living in Kent for so long I knew that it has much royal heritage and is known as the Garden of England. From this information it inspired me to have a tree next to the river, to represent nature. I took it upon myself to draw this image as a visual and here is the original draft I came up with.

 1st Draft Logo

I had shown this to the group and they quite liked it as the initial idea. After 'After effects' lectures, our group discussed having the logo animate. Something simple as our group are amateurs with the software. Although we could practise and learn, but this would take too much of our time when we had to follow up 2 stories and produce them.
I suggested a leaf falling off the tree, because it was simple. I did think about having the river animate but thought that it was going to make the logo crowded, where the logo was not going to be simple any longer.

From the suggestion of having a leaf falling off the tree other members of the team suggested to have the title growing, like nature does. Someone said possibly the title growing as if from the ground. This is also metaphorical to the community growing in the area.
Working on the logo, led us to thinking about the title of the News channel. Some of the suggestions were - Growing Medway, Medway Community, Thriving Medway and Medway Life. It was an ongoing process.

After much development and through the news stories that we had decided to cover, we thought that the news pieces are going as far as Sittingbourne which is out of Medway. So this changed the idea of the working title and widening our target audience to Kent. Now most of our working titles had been Kent related.

We had also taken our rough draft logo to our tutor Helen, and she does not like the tree. We suggested having a castle, or maybe a animal instead because of the countryside. We also looked at Kents logo.

Kent's Logo

Invicta (meaning undefeated or unconquered) was used in Roma invicta meaning "Unconquered Rome" and is the motto of the county of KentEngland.

We found that Kent had already used the horse in their logo at their motto was INVICTA which meant undefeated as they had the title 'Garden of England' for over 400 years in which they lost to North Yorkshire in 2006.

Our group finally came up with the simple Kent Life News. As the area we are covering is Kent, and stories we cover affects peoples life's. Keeping to the leaf idea, we agreed on using the title for the logo and a leaf in the dot of the 'i', which changes depending on the season.
For example, Summer will have a sun, winter will have a snowflake, spring with a fresh green leaf and autumn a autumn red/orange leaf.
