My adaptation will not have a voice in the poem, so I needed to write up the poem onto the timeline. This is going to guide me along where the images are going to be placed to connect to the words. I did this first using the titles and used a title for each line. This is so that if I needed to stretch out a sequence for a line, I can. The title will stay on top of the image so I can see visually and get an idea of pacing and how the images matched each line.

Sound effects

As I had done some research on the war and learnt that many inventions flourished because of it, it gave me an idea to use sounds of machines in my work. My aim is to affect the audience in a way that war has affected soldiers. So I came up with the idea of having something repetitive running through the background.
Looking at the article on this website 'Inventions that flourished thanks to WW1':

Before the war many people used pocket watches to tell the time. I read that  'Ground soldiers needed watches but it was also vital to have their two hands free and ready for battle... So, the wristwatch was handier than the pocket watch.' - This gave me the idea to use the sound of ticking. The use of the ticking could build an impact into the adaptation as a metaphor for the possible countdown of the soldiers lives.
During searching for a ticking sound of the watch, I came across a ticking of a metronome. I listened to it and thought this could fit into the film. Metronomes are known to be used for musicians, but I have found that it can be used for post traumatic stress disorder, a common disorder known to have affected many soldiers at war. The United Psychological services call it the interactive Metronome therapy, they use it to help many disorders, one that includes post traumatic stress disorder.

'Interactive Metronome...is also being used to treat symptoms of trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.'

So from this it gave me an idea that this ticking of the metronome comes from a soldier who we don't see or hear recalling his war in a dreamlike way.

I found this was the year that filmmaker Cecil B de Mille's first motion picture 'The Squaw Man' was produced in hollywood. It was the first film to use an art director. Film noir was dominant in the 1910's where filmmakers played with lighting and the contrast between light and dark, which worked well with the increase of crime films being produced.
1914 was also the year that WW1 started and brought motion picture to a halt. So I chose to use a sound effect of a 16mm reel as a tribute to the film industry struggling through the war.

4th December evening. - editing.

Whilst editing, the files started taking long to render, my project started to freeze. It was the first time I had edited through my hard drive and I thought it was too much data for my hard drive to run. It came to a time where Everytime I re-started my laptop and open up final-cut, and it would just freeze. I could not do anything any further. So, I decided to move my project and files onto my internal hard drive. First plan was to clean everything off my internal hard drive so the project will have plenty of space to edit, render and export. Then I would transfer the video files so the project can find and link to the files. This was because previously when I needed to export, my mac was full where there was no memory space for it to export.
When I cleared the files off my mac, I went into final cut and imported the video files. When I did this, I noticed that everything, including the project was wiped clean. I went into my 'trash' to find the file for the project. Couldn't find the project file. My friends Kei another filmaker and Seamus - colour editor who are experts with final cut, tried to give me some suggestions and guidance on trying to find the files so I don't have to re-edit the whole project again, but nothing seemed to work.

Conversation I had between my friends to help me find my project.

So, I couldn't find my project but still have my video files backed up. The only thing I can do now is to quickly re-edit my film. Well, at least I know where the clips are going to be, therefore the edit should be quick. I have learnt not to ever work off my hard drive. Also, this has got me to think about upgrading my internal hard drive, especially if my projects and files are going to take up so much space.

Re-Editing the file from my internal hard drive was going fine, but as I came to the fine editing the computer had started to freeze up again. I made sure everything was switched off in the background that could be slowing the computer down, but it was still slow. Today, I have wasted 4 hours switching my computer on and off just to edit a little bit of my film. I have split the film into 5 projects, 1 project per verse. This could improve the computers performance, but I have found that final cut 'will use all the RAM you’ve installed on your system'

This is the first time I know about this. Now I know, I have decided to install a bigger RAM for my Mac and processor so I do not have any problems in the future, but for now, I have to keep editing and be patience.

Overnight as I spent more time editing, I decided to export each verse as it gets done because learning from before, final cut may shut down and freeze on me. The more I wanted to fine edit, the more the software froze. I managed to complete verses 1,2 and 4. Verse 5 was in the process, but verse 3 took the longest to edit as it was the verse that took up the most fine editing. As I was near completion for verse 3, I wanted to fine tune it and ready to export, then my Final Cut crashed. I was no longer able to switch on final cut and see the layout of the screen. As the software was loading it freezes when it is trying to read 'Verse 3'. So I knew this was the one causing me problems.

Overnight I looked online to find out what I could do to fix the problem. I deleted all the render files, and other files which I was guided through in my 'library' folder. Still nothing was happening. I then decided, there was nothing else I can do and there was not enough time for me to re-edit again in the studios even though I had 3 verses exported out.
