Can realism be about something not real?

Realism is a construct. Presents itself as the real world.. Advances in realism often equates to advances in technology.

Realism - real people not ideal people.

Collapse of romans collapsed the realism. Nomads came in and brought their own art and own sense of realism.

Came back in 15th C when oil paints were invented. (Movement of technology)

Realism in theatre - 1870s

Drama was to give the universal truth.

Truth in setting, diction and plays itself. Ordinary truth in ordinary life.

Props and scenery in a scenario - mis-en-scene

Realistic language of the stage. Believable.

Each century humans see reality more than religion.

Contemporary setting, no aliens, ideal life/way of living of ordinary people (not the elite classes), interprets experience from a political view.

TV audience is sociall extended unlike for theatre or cinema films (reach more people)

Lends itself to human scale, viewed in human habitats.

TV typically deals with contemporary - 'nowness'

E.g set, costume

As long as you put them in the corrects concept its believable.

Use of consistency for characters triats.

Non-realist imagery could be real e.g Simpsons - real depiction of everyday life.

E.g sci-fi 

Star trek - clean, outfit non-real but placed into correct concept can be believable

Camera work can place the audience into the world e.g eastenders.

Everything is not too real as they dont travel to work compared to real life. All in the square.

Too real is not needed, need to dramatise it to create story.

Editing - creates their 'real' part of life.

Big brother - more real but constructed by doing tasks and the housemates know they are being watched. So can over exaggerate to gain public views.

Invasion of the real that shouldn't be there.

Real - because we can see ourselfs or our world in the characters world.

Dont have to look real to be real. Depends on what you depict to be real.
