Problems during production

Lateness

Problem
Everyone was supposed to meet at a certain time so we could have an hour to brief and re-cap the production for the day. Someone turned up an hour late because the cabs were fully booked.

Solution
Taxi should have been booked the day before so they didn't have to wait in the queue knowing the cab would be infront of the house in the morning.

From this we had an hour less to brief.

Travels

Problem
The original arrangement was for me to pick up Dave, whilst leaving the equipment with the rest of the crew to set up. We had a late message from Dave saying his train arrives at 1.40pm, also Tim saying his bus was cancelled, so he was going to take the taxi.

Solution
We suggested Tim and Dave should meet at Chatham station and take the taxi together whilst the rest of the group start setting up.

Sound

Problem
The cable connection to the mic was making noise whenever the mic was being moved around.

Solution
Tape the connection together, and get the presenter to hold the mic where the tape is.

Filming space

Problem
We had less space than before. The librarians were more strict than before and decided to tell use that we wern't allowed to use the space in the childrens section.

Solution
The crew moved closer to the table and we had changed the place where the camera was supposed to end to the corner of the table because there was less space to move around.

Interview time

Problem
Whilst running through the interview with everyone we found out that Carole and Angela spoke too long to express their viewpoint, and 2 mins ran quick. We realised there was no time to move to the tables to interview the other people involved.

Solution
We moved the interviewees to the tables where the elderly women knits, so there were knitting items on the table framed in the mis en scene. We also decided to scrap the interviews with the other ladies involved with the knitting because they were not as important as the two who we are originally going to interview.

Overall, I feel that there were small details we had missed out which delayed the shoot for example, we should have timed the interview beforehand with ourselves, knowing one of the interviewees were going to talk alot.
The crew also needed to have sort out their own travel priorities. I suggest next time we should all make our own way to the shooting location so we don't have to wait on each other. This way if one person is late, it does not hold everyone else back.
I felt that my role had been taken over as a director by the assistant producer. I had tried to put my voice across with directing where the interviewees were going to stand because we had already discussed this along with following the storyboard. I decided to let the production assistant direct because I felt that it would be unprofessional of me to raise my voice to get my point across.

I am beginning to feel that I am not suitable for a Director role and still prefer organising as a Producer. As there was the Milton Regis report to shoot, I was going to stick with my role and re-try directing and be a little more forceful without giving up.
