Idea Development
To gain a sense of content in documentaries, I had a look at BBC3 website to watch a few documentaries. I chosen to watch BBC3 documentaries in particular because my task is to create a documentary for that channel. This would also guide me with content, edit styles and language in particular to hit the target audience for the channel.
I had watched and analysed a programme called 'Life and death row - Judgement'
'Life and Death Row Trailer - Crime and Punishment' - BBC 3
At the beginning there is an worded intro with information about punishment for crime in America. This information give the audience some knowledge into the related subject. For our documentary we could add an intro introducing some statistics about single parenting in the UK to gently bring the audience into the subject.
Then there was an intro into the person who we follow for the documentary, for our film we could talk about struggles from Zoeys past and question the audience on what zoey decides to do
about becoming a single parent. This information will try to reel in the audience to want to watch what happens to Zoey and her decisions, then find out what happens in the end. Will the ending be bad or will it be good?
Analysing the 'Life on Death Row', I had noticed some archive footage of the news relating to the subject. I was thinking we could think of something in the media
right now about struggles of parenting? e.g benefit cuts, food banks etc…?
In order to look for media related issues I looked at a few videos such as 'Panorama - Hungry Britian' about the increase of people using food banks and 'Breadline Britain, about people struggling to live in Britain.
'Hungry Britian' Panorama - BBC
Breadline Britain - BBC
Alongside the Breadline Britain series of documentaries, I came across this documentary which would be something similar to our outcome of our film.
'Breadline Britain The Job of Mum' - BBC
I have noticed that when they filmed the interview with the mother, it is in a more relaxed environment - her kitchen in her own home. Also, the audio had interference by the children. This was agreeable by the audience because we then see shots of the children playing whilst the interview was going on. So, the audience knew that the noises of the children came from in the room. This may be a problem we will have to deal with as we would be interviewing single parents and something we have to think about when editing shots together.
We have researched and found a woman called Yvonne who had been through being a young parent at the age of 17, also having relationship issues with the father of the child, domestic violence, then having to leave him and bring up her son alone. She now has her own business life coaching and is into teaching young teenage mums and helping them through tough times. Shannelle had called up Gingerbreads media contact to find out if Yvonne was available to talk to and if she wanted to be involved in the documentary. We followed up on the call and another person told us she was not getting involved with media.
We chose her story because she has struggled through life and has made something of herself. This story would inspire young women to feel that they can make something of themselves if they really work for it.
We then decided to look up other women and inspiring stories we could document on. I found a womans blog who's title is called 'Not Supermum'. This title caught my eye, because our theme is about heros and our title of the documentary is called Wonder woman. I got curious to find out why she has a blog which is titled Notsupermum.
Letter to Notsupermum
After trying to get in touch with her via email, she replied saying that she would not be interested in taking part with our documentary.
Her reply
In the end, our group went to the Salvation Army in Chatham to have a look at a group called Mummy and Me, for single parents. We were introduced to an amazing lady, Zoey and her son Ronnie. As we spoke to her about her past and present, there was a huge improvement from what happened to her. She had spoken about going through domestic violence, drug abuse with an unstable childhood. Even though she felt she was ready to speak out about it, I realised this is a very touchy subject, therefore we had to tread carefully when she recalls her past as we do not want to upset her feelings.
We discussed about some amazing footage we would love to film, such as a journey through bottles of alcohol in her kitchen when Zoey introduces her alcohol addiction. A re-enactment of a little girl peeking through the door with mumbling sounds of arguments to show domestic violence. These ideas came to us after watching 'Dreams of a life'.

For example here in a clip of the film, everything in the mis-en-scen can show the type of character who lives here. From this image I can tell that the character who lives in this place can be quite lazy because theres half eaten food on the plate, on the floor. The person is female, because there is a dress hanging up on the closet door. The lights in the room are not natural lighting and only lit up by lights in the actual room itself. The dark shadows created helps create a sense of loneliness, sadness and a sense of mystery.
Analysing the clip below from the film, the audience can get an understanding that this character could live a busy lifestyle because we can see dirty dishes piled up in the sink. The 'washed' cookery and the sink is dusty, and there is an unwashed bowl that has grown mould, this suggests the length of time the kitchen has been left untouched.

Test shoots
A couple of test shoots for lighting and sound levels. I feel the lighting for this would be perfect for when Zoey talks about herself recovering from alcohol, this creates the sense that this film is her counselling session.
