Wonderwoman - A documentary by Sei-Kai Leung, Colleen Anderson and Shannelle Laniyan

Synopsis

In this documentary the theme is based on heroism. 'Wonder woman' is a inspiring documentary focused on the lives of inspirational women who have been through tough times and have become successful in their lives.

Research and Facts
We found '38% of lone parents with 3 or more children were employed in 2012'. This means that 62% of single parents do not have jobs therefore '41% of dependant children living in lone families are living in poverty'.
3 million children living in single family homes in the UK women account for 91% of all lone parent families with children.
We are hoping to promote the fight to stop poverty in single family homes and stressing the importance of help and support for those less fortunate than most.

Pitch
We had a look at Gingerbread which is a charity aimed to help single parents going through tough times and found a lady called Yvonne who had been through domestic abuse whilst having a child, raised a child by herself and now set up her own life coaching business. Access should be fine as we made a call to the charity to find out if she would be available to interview her. This documentary could aslo help promote the charity Gingerbread so other single parents know that help is available. Location of filming would be at Yvonnes home for interviews or gingerbread office, and surrounding area (hometown) e.g park and school when she takes her child to school.

Transmission - BBC3

Monday 9pm
Wonder-woman is an inspiring documentary focused on the work of a UK charity called Gingerbread who provide services for single parents.
Running time - 10mins

Target audience

As this is a documentary that would be shown on BBC3, our target audience would be for youths at the age of 16-34 as it is a youth channel and mainly for females as it is about women as heroes. In regards to audience profiling it would be targeted at those in the catergory C2DE this is the largest demographic of women across the age spectrum, this will also target those 'from young mums to retirees' which could relate to the issues in the documentary.
Those aged 16-34 would be at their life stage where there are young first time mothers. This audience in this catergory tend to have more 'TV as me time' and in the same age group women watch TV more than men.
Schedule - We have chosen the documentary for Monday at 9pm to be aired because the documentary is more serious such as 'Life on death row' a 3 part series which is being played on BBC3 about that time. After 'life on death row' BBC3 will be playing a documentary called 'Prostitution - whats the harm?'. The chosen time slot for our documentary will be the best time as our documentary sees women as heros and the documentary after is about women on the other side of the spectrum degrading themselfs. This would be a great contrast.
As well as being played at 9pm we have also chosen this timebecause it is late peak 'prime time viewing option' for the group.

Style and Structure

Expository - Where you hear voiceover commentary which explains images that we see, such as wildlife and historical documentaries. This usually help inform the audience about what they are seeing or something related to.

Observational - Usually known as 'Fly on the wall' which appear in real time where audience watches events that take place unfold. Filmakers would be unaware to what is going to happen whilst filming and they do not interfere with events taking place. Often made without commentary, voiceovers, re-enactments or anything to suggest a conclusion telling the audience what to think. Any dialogue would come from the person involved in the documentary itself. The audience will usually draw a conclusion for themselves.

Our chosen style will be an expository and perfomative documentary. This will persuade the viewer to get involved with activities without interviening with events that take place. There will be visual representations of personal experiences to evoke emotional response from the audience. For example charity campaigns where you dont see the action but hear the story/sounds in an empty room. It will be an inquisitive documentary to get the viewer to think about 'what if they were in their shoes, what would they do' in certain situations.

Casting the perfect character

Our group researched into looking at other parenting groups one of which was the Salvation Army. A group called 'Mainly Music' and 'Mummy and Me'. This is a place where single parents (mums) bring their toddlers to interact with other children, this group also give mums a chance to take a breather from looking after their toddlers and talk to other parents about their concerns or support each other about parenting.

We had spoken to Andrea who is the minister of the Salvation Army about our project and she was more than happy to help. She suggested a lady called Zoey who had been adopted when she was younger, a victim of abuse, drugs, alcohol and that ever since she became pregnant to her 2nd child she decided to change her life for her and her child. This change lead her to finding the Salvation Army in which the sense of comminity helped transform her life around.

The producer and I had taken a trip to visit the Salvation Army in Chatham to see 'Mainly Music' group for toddlers on the next Monday. The organisers were very welcoming. We had noted down a few toddlers we carefully watched that we thought had great character for our story. As we could not take down their names, we wrote down descriptions of them.
Andrea introduced Zoey after the activity class to us and we explained what our project involved. We started talking to her and listened to her reason for being in the Salvation Army. She had spoken to us about a variety of past incidents that lead her to the Salvation Army. The producer and I immediately thought, 'great, we have a story and a real character'. Whilst speaking to Zoey, I was watching her son 'Ronnie' talk to the other helpers at the Salvation Army and noticed that everyone knew this little child as if they were family. He is only 3 and can speak very well. Watching him help out a granny picking up her gloves that fell onto the ground and putting it back into her trolley touched our hearts; especially after hearing all the tough experiences Zoey had been through and bringing up this child as a single mother, she had done well. This was her story we wanted to tell, and it shows there should be nothing in the world to stop you from bringing up your child even if you are single.
