Producer

A producer is someone who turns story ideas into profitable films, brings the right cast and crew together on the project and is responsible for all aspects of the production. They are the first point of contact for all production partners, investors and distributors. Producers approve script changes and cost reports.

In pre-production producers bring the key heads of the creative team together such as Director,  Cinematographer, Production Designer and Key cast members. Other responsibilities include getting the budget together and raising the funds. They approve locations, studio hire, final scripts, production schedule and budget.

During production producers are responsible for the operation of the team each day.

In Post-production they work with the director and liaise with the post-production department. They deal with finance and distribution companies to plan out marketing and distribution of the finished film.

producer can't be influenced by writing up paperwork but can be INFORMED to make certain decisions based on personal experience of seeing how the production team works.

For example, on the production 'My Best Friends wedding' I was asked to create a welcome pack for the crew coming over from china, which includes a document of safety information such as important contacts like police address, hospitals, address of hotel they will be staying, a map of London, tourist information of things to do in London (for their days off) and a copy of the unit list with contact numbers. Other things included are sim cards, small sweet treats, pack of tissues, chewing gum and anti-bac gel. These sim cards were all set up and compatible for their devices. I would never have known what a welcome pack is and that it exists and what it contains if I handn't worked on the production team.

I will not need this information for our project as it is uk based and actors will be local.
On the production I have been given access to production paperwork which was set up on dropbox as I was given small tasks to update unit list, create the welcome pack, create the locations document etc... From this, I am able to gain copies of budgets, schedules, call sheets that professionals make use of.
On our production I have set up a dropbox account so both director and I have access to the paperwork and change if necessary. Therefore we will always have access to the updated information.

On the production team as a production runner, I was able to follow the production from beginning to end gaining behind the scenes access which is not often seen by ordinary people.

Executive Producer

An Executive Producer supervises the producer on behalf of the studios, financiers and distributor. Their responsibility is to oversee the completion of the film on time, raise the finance and to secure  rights for the film. The executive producer creates the packaging of the film which includes securing rights to the story and the development of the screenplay, then hands over the package to the producer. Their main responsibility is involved with the financial side of the production such as sealing deals with distributors and finding money from investors.

'On smaller independent films, a well-known Producer, Director or star may also be given the Executive Producer title. This acknowledges that their association with the project has helped to get financiers and distributors on board.
In production, the Executive Producer acts as a mentor to the Producer. They also supervise the production for the financiers. This type of Executive Producer is almost always involved in short film production schemes. In this case they co-ordinate the film's production from initial financing through to final distribution.' - Creative SkillSet.org
Line Producer
Line Producers are employed by the Producers or Executive Producers of the film and are in charge of all business aspects of the film. Line producers are given the script and they give a breakdown of the screenplay into a timetable. From this they can estimate the cost of each days shooting in which they can produce a budget to show the total funding they need. Once the Producer and Executive Producer have raised the money they can then go into pre-production.
During pre-production they work with the heads of departments such as the Director, Art Director, Production Manager and Assistant Director. Other responsibilities are hiring crew, finding production office, location scouting, sourcing equipment and suppliers and selecting crew members.
'Line Producers are ultimately responsible for overseeing everything and making sure the production is completed on time and within budget.' - Creative SkillSet.org
Line producers controls, monitors and juggle the expenditures and resources and hand over the final budget to the production accountant. They are responsible for the health and safety procedures and insurance claims. At the end of the production the line producer usually oversees the 'wrap' of the production.
