Directions is creative input.
How to show a story through pictures.
Director is the tyre of the wheel. The story is at the centre of the wheel.
Director touches everything, responsible for everything you see on screen. Think about what you need to think about as a director.

Script -
You dont get tv directors writing scripts because of each episode. If they do it must be 'approved'. They have been hired to dorect the script. They rarely make changes to the script but would work with writer and producer to make improvement to bring their vision.
They dont change the dialogue for the script for long drama series pr entertainment programmes such as eastenders. Lots of people involved in the process.
Is a blueprint for every decision the director has to make.
You have plenty of questions and will need to know the answers. To get the answers you must know the script inside out.
First area of choices
Collaberation - cast and crew
Cast - how many cast and what cast requirements and extras do you need for the script.
Crew - who is in your creative team

Content

Visuals - tone, style, camerawork, handheld, smooth, vcolour, black/white, 3D?

Design - sets, locations, costume, props

Sound design - diegetic/non diegetic music, foley,

Script, cast and crew, content ready.
Final task - what and when, Shooting script/shot list
Schedule

Shooting script/shot list, storyboards. - more camera and sound directions on it.

Director needs to know how they will shoot.
Shot list - Detailed list for shot for each scene. Incl frame size camera movement
What - script content
How - shot list, storyboard

When - schedule
By line producer or assisstant director

Cast and crew avaliability
Location - maximise time in location
Time of day
Time of year
Weather
Money - budget usually dictate how long you shoot something for

Could start with complicated scenes, depends on avaliability.
You set the tone as a dire tor of the whole film from the start.

Need to LEAD cast and crew
Communicate clearly
Know content better than anyone else
Be adaptable

Working with cast - block out and rehearse
Process of working out where people go, stand sit etc... Director works with cast for what is best
Rehearse - go through process of going through script. Opportunity to try diff things.
Actors dialogue is standard.
Always be open tocollaboration.

Editor - gives fresh perspective, sometimes they can suggest something better.

Author director - very precise
Knows exactly what they want and directs people to do it precisely. Still very collaberative but still directors decision.

The conductor -
Directs cast and crew and trust cast and crew skills and to get on with it, so can work together.

Author - Scorsese , cameron coen, hitchcock, christopher nolan
Clear about their style

Conductor - Doug Liman, Jon Favreau, Katheryn Bigalowe
Work less recognisable

Tv - conductor is more dominant than author director because any changes need to be 'approved'

Director must:-
Know the story
Be Prepared
Be Adaptable
Be Confident
Have excellent Communication
