To overcome this problem, we all decided that we had to edit the footage on my mac. The director and I had gone out to buy a memory card reader for the canon so everyone had the rest of the footage from the Canon camera.
There were times when some of us had to be elsewhere, so in order for us to be able to carry on with editing we met up and started transferring files in the car as soon as we bought the card reader.
The next day, the director and I had met up half way to try and edit some more. We were editing over lunch at TGI's.
Whilst editing our group was waiting for the actors for the re-enactments that would show zoey growing up and moving to different homes. The director and I agreed that we should start editing the footage we have whilst the Producer, looked for the actors.
Problem
Time started running out for shooting anything else. We were still waiting for the producer to sort out the shoot.
Resolution
So I suggested that we should just film different doors and editing those together so there were visuals that would relate to when Zoey talks about growing up in different homes, living an unstable life. This would also mean that we didnt need to wait on actors, and the audience can creativley imagine it through their minds.
On the last few days to edit, we had already set out each topic going through the timeline.
Problem
We had feedback from our tutor saying that the interview was too dialogue heavy and it was too depressing. Our tutor was suggested to focus more on what the character is doing now rather than focusing more on her history.
Resolution
This feedback had changed our version of the documentary and time was definitely running out. Our group went to go through the footage and to re-edit. We did not have enough of a story about what she does now to fill up 10mins of film as we focused more on her history, as the original idea for the documentary was to focus on her story from her past. In the end our team decided to split each topic, and each edit footage, then come together and piece each of our edits together to form the documentary as a whole.
The film needed some narration to introduce the character.
Problem
On the day of the deadline, we were still editing. We needed some narration to introduce the character. Our group knew it would have been too late to take out equipment to record the dialogue.
Resolution
Using our phones, we went into a quiet room to record the dialogue quickly whilst the director kept on editing the footage together. I then tried to send the sound to our emails but there was a problem sending it. Time was running out and we needed to get the dialogue uploaded, so I started to upload the sound onto i-tunes so that we could extract it straight onto the edit through final-cut proX.
Conclusion and reflection
Overall, I felt if we had focused more on the lady's present life there would not be much of a story. This feedback created a unstable and confusing documentary as our group started to try to re-edit what was meant to be a slow film about her past, to a happy film about the present with the footage we had shot. The 'happy' type of documentary would not have worked because the shots were planned to focus on the sad story, therefore I felt this final edit of the film did not work and was confusing. I felt at times we did not know what our purpose of the documentary was supposed to be. Were we focusing on the boy as her saviour?, how she survived her traumatic experiences when growing up? or how she is a hero for being a single mother? These questions confused us a little.
There were times when the team fell apart with communication and a lack of interest in the production. Some of us had commitments, so we worked around each team member. If someone was absent for the meeting or film shoot, the other two would carry on and try to update the other person. This was ok, as long as we kept communicating, but there was a point where we lacked communication where team members wouldn't reply back to important messages regarding shoots. There was a point where team members were feeling left out, but we had formed a group message in 'Whatsapp', therefore anything being mentioned for example locations, times or meetings, everyone would know about. This was to prevent anyone being left out because we would all have received the same message.
Slow moving shots such as journeying through bottles of alcohol in the kitchen as Zoey talks about her alcoholic addiction could have improved the edit of the film. A montage of 'Zoey' growing up could have also helped improve the visuals of the film. Due to the lack of preparation and time constraints it was unfortunate we did not have this footage to include. Our group had shot some great footage and cut-aways, but unfortunately we wasted time on filming footage that we did not need.
