Directing drama - all set up so you can collabarate with people.
Meeting with exec producer a week before shoot.

Stunts always shoot with multiple camera

Good director should know how to edit in their head.

With eye contact you must keep the 180 degree rule
Remember to think what you have shot otherwise you could be arguing where the line is.

On set you dont usually get rehearsal times.
To save time work out where you want to shoot by drawing up a plan and put the camera angles/set up of where you want to shoot. So you can see it visually.

How to choose the location
Discuss with the loaction manager if you had an idea in your head and what camera angles you would like to shoot. When you choose the location you need to think about sound, lighting etc... If it is not worth it then find somewhere else.
If your pretending to be somewhere else and it is loud, dont film there.
As a director you have to think about the crew about what they need to work with. Think about everyones problems.
One key to shikting good scenes is to have a good master shot

American series can afford to take the risks because they get the bigger rewards in the end. They lose money first 3-4yrs then get the residuals back once successful.

Uk Tv - script is the king for tv. It will decide the shape of the series.
American tv - no script department, writers of the script departments are the producers.

Audience must understand whats going on with the sound off.
Perception of what is in the script and what have you achieved.
Have tofight lack of trust with the producer as a director.
Must deal with regularatory regime from TRUST and audience.
BBC - TRUST is their regularatory body. Must listen to them not OFCOM.

OFCOM everyone as general.

Try to have the knowledge of what you know what you can and cannot shoot, thinking about audience and time the show it broadcasted.
To keep everyone thinking things are going to get done. Try to keep everyone happy, especially if its going to be a long day of shooting.

People rarely look at each other in real life. Its natural when they dont look at each other.

Stage a scene with actions. The characters may not need to be in the same room as each other.
Get the characters to do something, act, keeping them busy would make it interesting.

Michael snow 10min tracking film shot - research
The abominal dr5 - kills 12 critics in different ways.
Bob ?? Cats eyes - good with use of locations
Shooting looking at a long space helps give depth of field.

Learn to look at where you are.
Always use your eyes, note down locations that could be used.
Look through books of stills to find killer shots

To illustrate looking of things made from silent films
Hitchcock - blackmail - silent film, story told visually
Subjective (character) and objective (god) in hitchcock films.  Mirror reflection.

Carl .... Danish filmaker trained as architect - vampyr, french german co-production.
Sound only for the killer moments that matter for the film.
Ordet - simple guy believes he is Jesus, goes for 3 day then brings mother back to life.

Pandoras box - louise brookston

Cat people - jacques tourneaur
Stalking scene
Swimming pool scene
Tell the story through sound - never see things just sounds and some shadows.
Swimming pool - reflections break up shadows.

Curse of the cat people - sequel, psychological

Never see the demon.

More interesting if you dont reveal anything throughout the film. Dont rely on dialogue.

2001 space oddessey - editing is time jump at the end
Hardly anyone has a conversation about the plot.

Death sequence - quite silent but still humming sound in the background. We can hear it more when we go out of the ship. Lots of chirping sounds from the buttons and flashing lights reflecting off his helmet.
Man vs machine - machine comes to life with no emotional tone of voice but dialogue describes emotion. Breathing it heavier and louder vs humming of machine.

Man - as if bug in machine.
So few shots because every shot counts.
To have little shots as possible you need to start with the right shot.

Story should go in the visuals not the dialogue.
Think of shots you got to pace the scene. Look at everything as time machine.

Tv drama dont have storyboards because its more for naturalism.

Beauty and the beast - original copto
Using people to hold up fireplace and eyes follow her etc... Imagination. No SFX
