Brandon Li who is a 1 person traveler, Shooter,DOP, Director and Editor gives us a masterclass on who to shoot alone, creating cinematic looks. Thiilm. Apart from sounds and colour grading, I will be making this film by myself. This class suited me as this masterclass with Brandon Li will give me useful tips on making use of surroundings and equipment I have to create a film which could look like it can take a bigger crew to make.
Screen Grab of the Live Class.
Below I have written my notes which has plenty of tips on how to shoot for my major project. Sometimes I feel I am on the same page as Brandon Li. I have found that some of his advice in this masterclass I already thought about and have already incorporated in my film. Such as breaking the editing rules, where usually we are taught to start with an establishing shot and get closer to the subject. In my storyboard, I begin with a close up shot of the character looking interested at a plant. This is what makes my character interesting to look at. Then we move out to reveal her location which the flicker of light distracts the character.
As an experimental video artist, I want to play with shots, angles, movements etc... these will be captured once the scene is set up and through the lens I can see and play around with movement and shot angles of the views. Making use of equipment in experimental ways such as turning the tripod upside down could give me a smooth low shot if I don't have a steadicam. For example the tracking shot of the body on the floor.
