'Meshes the Afternoon' 1943

Maya Deren 'Meshes of the afternoon' has a few elements similar to my film such as themes of repetitiveness because the character has put themselves in a vicious cycle, camera movements such as the scene where Maya Deren climbing up the stairs, faceless figure and play on shadows. Even though these images may be similar, the meaning will be different to my film.

Spiritual Journey theme - Darren Aronofsky 'The Fountain'

'The Fountain' 2006

The Fountain is not like many films. This is a spiritual journey finding the tree of life, and finding the answer to immortality. This film relates to my film as if the character is going through a spiritual journey, but in my film I want to create the the film where the audience also experiences it.  Narrative takes place in three different eras 1500 A.D, 2000 A.D and 2500 A.D. Both actors play in all three eras but with three different stories.

1st -  Tomás Verde, the conquistador  searches for the tree of life and the elixir of immortality to free his captive queen, Isabella, from the Spanish Inquisition.
2nd - Tom, a medical researcher and neuroscientist, working with various trees, looks for a cure that will save his dying wife, Izzi, who is suffering from brain tumour.
3rd - Tommy, a space traveler, traveling with an aged tree encapsulated within a bubble, moves toward a dying star that’s wrapped in a nebula; he seeks eternity with his love.

The fountain is a film packed with reoccurring symbolism, with the film moving from darkness to light. This movement is Aronofsky's own interpretation of multiple religions such as Buddhism and Christianity as seen in the film.

Some viewers find this difficult to understand as the film is rather an experience than a film to watch.  Viewer need to understand that it is most important to feel the emotions and you dint need to understand every detail of the film. Therefore, and appropriate amount of emotional intelligence is needed to understand the film.

Looking at views from IMDB, I can see there is a divide between those who love it and those who hate it and can't understand why those who do like the film. Judging from the majority of comments, those who like it have various different reasons why they do, such as the love story, the colour palette or the music. Those who don't like it, seem to either not understand, are confused or called it 'pretentious nonsense' Those who did like it say 'It's not for everyone', which is true judging by the division between those who agree or disagree with the film.

To truly understand the intentions of the film you have to look at the director themselves and try to understand what was the purpose of their creation of the film.

Consciousness - 'The Matrix'

'The Matrix' 1999

As my film ends where the character transcends, they wake up in a different location. This leaves the audience wondering how they got there?, if it is another dream she has woken up to?, have they died and woken to another place? (reincarnation). I want to leave this as if it could be an open ending. This part of my film can be recognised as the end. The experience will leave the audience feeling relieved from the struggles and difficulty of watching the character suffer.

Tara

Tara embodies the feminine strengths of great caring and compassion, the ability to endure stressful and even terrifying moments, the acts of creation, and the source of sustenance and protection....In other of Her forms, such as the White Tara, She embodied inner peace and spiritual acceptance. She symbolizes purity and is thought to be part of every good and virtuous woman. Tara is an archetype of our own inner wisdom. She Guides and protects us as we navigate the depths of our conscious minds, helping us to transform consciousness, our own personal journeys of freedom.
Adapting elements of this figure at the end of my film explains what the character went through and therefore, the audience may have an idea and understanding of what the meaning of the ending is. This also depends on the level of knowledge the audience has on spiritual goddesses such as Tara in Buddhism.
